How to Get from Ometepe to San Juan del Sur via San Jorge

Leave Ometepe by ferry, connect at Puerto San Jorge and compare the local bus, $13 shared shuttle and private-transfer options to San Juan del Sur.

Ferry arriving at Puerto San Jorge from Ometepe, Nicaragua

Information checked: September 2026

The key to travelling from Ometepe to San Juan del Sur is timing the ferry properly. Once you are back on the mainland at San Jorge, the rest of the journey is relatively simple.

Think of the route in two parts:

  • Ometepe → San Jorge by ferry
  • San Jorge → San Juan del Sur by bus, shared shuttle or private transfer

The ferry is the part you need to plan first. It is completely separate from any mainland transport, so your ferry ticket is not included with a Sunset Viaje shuttle or private transfer and there is no protected ferry-to-shuttle connection.

If you want to use our 2:30 PM shared shuttle from San Jorge, we recommend taking a ferry from Ometepe no later than 12:30 PM. Earlier is even better if you want more margin.

Moyogalpa is usually the easiest departure point because it has the widest choice of sailings. Once you reach San Jorge, the US$13 shared shuttle is the low-hassle option: it takes you straight to central San Juan del Sur without another change in Rivas.

First: get from Ometepe to San Jorge

Before thinking about buses or shuttles, choose a ferry that gets you to Puerto San Jorge with enough time to spare.

Most travellers will leave from Moyogalpa. San José del Sur also has ferries, but there are fewer departures, so the best port depends partly on where you are staying on the island and what time you need to reach San Jorge.

Which ferry should you take for the 2:30 PM shuttle?

If you want to connect with the San Jorge → San Juan del Sur shared shuttle, we recommend taking the 12:30 PM ferry from Moyogalpa at the latest.

The crossing to San Jorge normally takes around 60–70 minutes. That should usually put you on the mainland with enough time to collect your luggage, walk out of the port and be ready for the shuttle.

However, this is not a guaranteed connection.

Ferries can be delayed by weather, maintenance or other operational issues. Sunset Viaje does not control the ferry and cannot guarantee that a delayed sailing will connect with the shared shuttle.

If missing the shuttle would create a serious problem for your trip, take an earlier ferry and give yourself more margin.

How early should you arrive at the Ometepe port?

We recommend reaching your departure port around 45 minutes before your ferry.

That gives you time to find the ticket area, buy your ticket, deal with luggage and board without rushing.

For the 12:30 PM Moyogalpa ferry, that means aiming to be at the port at around 11:45 AM.

Do not plan to arrive at 12:25 PM and assume everything will fall into place.

Moyogalpa or San José del Sur?

Moyogalpa is usually the most practical departure point because it has more sailings to San Jorge.

If you are staying closer to San José del Sur, leaving from there may still make sense. At the time of our September 2026 check, the useful morning ferry for this connection is the 7:30 AM departure. The later afternoon sailing is too late for the 2:30 PM shared shuttle.

Because ferry timetables are dynamic, check the current schedule before planning your final morning on Ometepe.

If the San José del Sur departures do not fit your plans, it may be easier to travel across the island to Moyogalpa and take one of the more frequent sailings from there.

Arriving at Puerto San Jorge

The ferry brings you into Puerto San Jorge, close to Rivas.

Puerto San Jorge ferry terminal in Nicaragua

Puerto San Jorge is the mainland connection point for ferries from Ometepe.

If you have booked the Sunset Viaje shared shuttle, the meeting point is just in front of the main port area. We confirm the exact meeting point as part of your booking.

For the 2:30 PM service, be at the confirmed meeting point and ready from 2:20 PM.

The vehicle is scheduled around the 2:30 PM departure, and because this is shared transport there can be a little variation in the exact collection moment. Stay close to the meeting point rather than walking off for lunch or assuming the driver will wait inside the port.

What if your ferry is delayed?

Contact Sunset Viaje as soon as you realise the ferry is running late.

We will tell you what is possible based on the driver and the rest of the passengers that day.

The important point is that the ferry and shuttle are separate services. Booking the shuttle does not create a protected connection, and a shared vehicle may not be able to wait for a significantly delayed ferry.

Once you reach San Jorge: choose your onward transport

Once you are off the ferry, you have three realistic choices:

  • shared taxi to Rivas + local bus to San Juan del Sur
  • direct shared shuttle from San Jorge
  • private transfer

Cheapest: public transport via Rivas

The cheapest route is to travel from San Jorge to Rivas and then change for San Juan del Sur.

Step 1: San Jorge to Rivas

Shared taxis and other local transport are normally available around the ferry arrival area.

For a shared taxi to Rivas, we would budget roughly US$2–5 per person, depending on the exact vehicle and arrangement.

The drive is short. Allow around 20 minutes to reach the main Rivas terminal area.

Tell the driver you want the bus terminal for San Juan del Sur.

Step 2: Rivas to San Juan del Sur

From Rivas, take the local bus to San Juan del Sur.

Rivas bus terminal for connections to San Juan del Sur

The Rivas terminal area is used for the onward local bus to San Juan del Sur.

We would budget roughly C$30–60 per person for this leg and allow around 45–60 minutes once the bus is moving.

The San Juan del Sur buses leave from the same general terminal area used by other regional services, so the connection is not complicated.

Rivas can feel busy when you arrive, especially because taxi drivers and other transport sellers tend to approach foreign travellers quickly.

You do not need to accept the first offer.

If you are unsure where to go, ask:

¿Dónde está el bus para San Juan del Sur?

A bus driver, conductor or stallholder can normally point you in the right direction.

On Sundays, services towards San Juan del Sur can be less frequent. If the next bus is not convenient, taking a taxi for the final leg is a reasonable fallback.

Who should use public transport?

We would choose this route if you are travelling on a tight budget, enjoy using local transport and do not mind another change after the ferry.

It works.

But after already getting yourself across Ometepe and onto the ferry, some travellers simply do not want another taxi-plus-bus connection.

That is where the shared shuttle becomes useful.

Low-hassle choice: shared shuttle to San Juan del Sur

If your ferry timing lines up, this is the option we would normally choose.

The Sunset Viaje shared shuttle runs daily from Puerto San Jorge to central San Juan del Sur.

  • Current price: US$13 per passenger
  • Online deposit: US$3
  • Cash balance at pickup: US$10
  • Scheduled departure: 2:30 PM
  • Be ready: from 2:20 PM at the confirmed port meeting point
  • Estimated arrival: around 4:00 PM
  • Booking cutoff: 9:00 PM on the previous evening

Shared shuttle from San Jorge to San Juan del Sur

A shared shuttle used for transport routes in Nicaragua.

Standard luggage is normally fine. If you have a surfboard, oversized bag or several pieces of luggage, tell us when booking so we can confirm space.

Why the shuttle works well after the ferry

The public route is cheap and manageable.

The advantage of the shuttle is simply that, once you step off the ferry, you are finished with connections.

You meet the vehicle at San Jorge and travel directly to central San Juan del Sur.

At US$13 per person, that is a fairly small premium to remove the Rivas change, especially if you have luggage or have already spent the morning travelling across Ometepe to reach the ferry.

The ferry is still your responsibility. The shuttle begins only once you reach San Jorge.

Where does the shuttle drop you?

Drop-off is at hotels, hostels and addresses in central San Juan del Sur.

Arrival in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua

San Juan del Sur is the final destination for the shared shuttle from San Jorge.

It does not include outlying beaches or accommodation outside the town centre, including places such as Playa Maderas and Playa Remanso.

If you are staying outside town, you can either take a local taxi from central San Juan del Sur or arrange a private transfer from San Jorge instead.

Most flexible: private transfer

A private transfer is the most flexible mainland option.

It makes particular sense if:

  • you are travelling as a family or small group
  • you have several large bags or surfboards
  • your ferry time does not line up with the shared shuttle
  • you want the driver waiting specifically for your arrival
  • you are staying outside central San Juan del Sur
  • you simply prefer to travel privately.

A private transfer does not make the ferry itself a protected connection, but it gives us more flexibility to plan the mainland pickup around your expected arrival than a scheduled shared shuttle can.

What makes the most sense after the ferry?

If the 12:30 PM ferry from Moyogalpa fits your plans, we would usually take the US$13 shared shuttle.

It is inexpensive and removes the Rivas connection.

If you are travelling on the lowest possible budget and are comfortable with local transport, the shared taxi to Rivas followed by the San Juan del Sur bus is perfectly workable.

If your ferry timing does not match the shuttle, you are travelling with several people, or you are staying at an outlying beach, a private transfer becomes much easier to justify.

Plan the ferry first, then the road journey

The road from San Jorge to San Juan del Sur is not the difficult part of this journey.

It is getting to your Ometepe departure port with enough time and choosing a ferry that leaves you a sensible buffer on the mainland.

For the 2:30 PM shared shuttle, our rule is simple:

Take the 12:30 PM Moyogalpa ferry at the latest, arrive at the Ometepe port around 45 minutes before departure, and be ready at the San Jorge meeting point from 2:20 PM.

Earlier is safer.

If you miss the 12:30 ferry, do not assume the next sailing will still work with the shared shuttle. Check the current ferry timetable and contact us to discuss the alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to get from Ometepe to San Juan del Sur?

Our default recommendation is to take the ferry from Moyogalpa to San Jorge and then use the direct US$13 shared shuttle to central San Juan del Sur.

What is the latest ferry we recommend for the shared shuttle?

We recommend the 12:30 PM Moyogalpa → San Jorge ferry at the latest for the 2:30 PM shuttle.

This is a recommended planning buffer, not a guaranteed connection. Ferry delays can still happen.

How early should I arrive for the ferry?

We recommend getting to your Ometepe departure port around 45 minutes before departure so you have time to buy your ticket and board without rushing.

Is the ferry ticket included with the Sunset Viaje shuttle?

No.

The ferry and the San Jorge → San Juan del Sur shuttle are completely separate. You arrange and pay for your own ferry crossing.

What happens if my ferry is delayed?

Contact Sunset Viaje immediately.

We will let you know what is possible, but because the vehicle is shared with other passengers it may not be able to wait for a significant delay.

Where do I meet the shuttle in San Jorge?

The pickup point is just in front of the main Puerto San Jorge area. Your exact meeting point is confirmed after booking.

Be ready there from 2:20 PM.

Can I travel from San Jorge to San Juan del Sur by public transport?

Yes.

Take a shared taxi or local transport from San Jorge to Rivas, then the local bus from Rivas to San Juan del Sur.

Can I leave Ometepe from San José del Sur instead of Moyogalpa?

Yes, but there are fewer ferries.

If you want the afternoon shared shuttle, check the current timetable carefully. In our September 2026 schedule, the 7:30 AM San José del Sur departure works comfortably, while the later afternoon ferry is too late.

Do you drop off at Playa Maderas or Playa Remanso?

The shared shuttle serves central San Juan del Sur only.

For outlying beaches, continue by local taxi from town or ask us about a private transfer from San Jorge.

Our recommendation

If you want the simplest version of this journey, we would plan it like this:

  1. travel to Moyogalpa in time to be at the port around 11:45 AM
  2. take the 12:30 PM ferry to San Jorge, or an earlier sailing if convenient
  3. be ready at the confirmed San Jorge meeting point from 2:20 PM
  4. take the US$13 shared shuttle to central San Juan del Sur

It is a simple journey when you leave enough time between the two separate stages.

The mistake to avoid is treating the ferry and shuttle as though they are one through-ticket.

They are not.

Plan the ferry conservatively, keep us updated if anything changes, and the mainland leg is easy to manage.
